Ocular Disease Diagnosis and Management

Using cutting-edge technology, we diagnose and manage conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts with precision. Early and accurate detection allows for prompt treatment and improved outcomes, enabling us to take a proactive approach to diseases that once had limited treatment options.

Because many of these conditions may show no visible symptoms and require specialized diagnostic equipment, routine comprehensive eye exams are essential for early detection and effective care. Learn more about our ocular disease management services below.

Diabetic Eye Exams

Diabetic retinopathy affects about 1 million Canadians and is the leading cause of blindness among adults. If untreated, it can lead to diabetic macular edema (DME) or retinal detachments, causing permanent vision loss. Early detection through annual eye exams is crucial, as symptoms may not appear in the early stages.

At Sullivan Optometry, we use the Zeiss Cirrus OCT for early diagnosis and effective management of diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Dhott has extensive experience in diabetic eye care from his time at Nationwide Vision’s Diabetic Eye Centers in the U.S.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, affecting over 450,000 Canadians, and damages the optic nerve, often with no early symptoms. The most common type, primary open-angle glaucoma, is known as the “silent thief of sight.” Without early detection, it can lead to irreversible vision loss, starting with peripheral vision and narrowing to tunnel vision.

Regular eye exams are essential for detecting early signs and preventing progression. A family history of glaucoma increases one’s risk factor – so those with relatives diagnosed with glaucoma should have routine testing to monitor their ocular health.

Cataracts

A cataract is a condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy and blocks light from entering the eye, thereby reducing one’s ability to see clearly. This clouding typically develops gradually with age but can sometimes progress more rapidly. Cataracts are common and can be effectively treated with cataract surgery once they reach an advanced stage.

The following are potential symptoms of cataracts:

  • Blurry or foggy vision

  • Double vision

  • Halos, ghost or trail-like after images

  • Dull or faded colour vision

  • Increased sensitivity to light and glare

  • Trouble with night driving

  • Trouble seeing and reading at night

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is recommended to schedule a routine eye exam for accurate diagnosis and management.

Macular Degeneration (AMD, ARMD)

As its name suggests, age related macular degeneration is a condition that involves a breakdown of the macula – the part of the eye responsible for detecting sharp, central vision. While there is no cure, some treatment options can slow progression to prevent further damage, making routine eye exams, especially after the age of 55, essential for early detection and management.

Macular degeneration is passed within families so if a family member has AMD, there is a 50% chance that you may develop it too. This highlights the importance of routine eye exams – especially if there is a family history of AMD.
