Diabetic Eye Exams (Partial MSP Coverage)
Diabetic retinopathy affects nearly 1 million Canadians and is the leading cause of blindness among working-age adults. Left untreated, it can progress to diabetic macular edema (DME), where damaged blood vessels leak fluid into the macula, causing permanent vision loss. Annual eye exams are crucial for those with diabetes, as early stages often show no symptoms. At Sullivan Optometry, we utilize the advanced Zeiss Cirrus OCT for early detection and effective management of diabetic retinopathy to prevent vision loss. Dr. Dhott, with extensive experience from his time at Nationwide Vision’s Diabetic Eye Centers, has a special interest in this area.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, affecting over 450,000 Canadians, and can cause irreversible vision loss by damaging the optic nerve. The most common type, primary open-angle glaucoma, is often symptomless in its early stages, earning it the nickname "silent thief of sight." Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection and treatment to prevent vision loss. As glaucoma progresses, it leads to peripheral vision loss and, eventually, tunnel vision. A family history of glaucoma increases your risk significantly, so routine testing with your optometrist is essential if a close relative has the condition.
Protect Your Vision with Early Detection
Early detection is key to preventing vision loss. Regular eye exams catch issues early, allowing for timely treatment to preserve your long-term eye health.
Cataracts
A cataract occurs when the eye's lens becomes cloudy, obstructing light and causing vision problems. This condition usually develops gradually with age, progressing slowly over years but sometimes rapidly within months. In Canada, advanced cataracts can be effectively treated with surgery. If you're noticing changes in your vision, it's important to consult an eye care professional for evaluation and management. Please get in touch with us if you experience any of the following symptoms.
-
Blurry or foggy vision, as if a film covers the eye that doesn't clear with blinking
-
Double vision or seeing halos/ghost images
-
Dull or faded color perception
-
Increased sensitivity to light and glare, such as from sunlight or headlights
-
Difficulty with night driving or reading in low light, requiring extra illumination
Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the primary cause of vision loss in individuals over the age of 55, impacting approximately 2.5 million Canadians. In AMD, central vision is affected, making tasks like reading, driving, and recognizing faces more challenging. There are two main types of AMD: dry AMD and wet AMD. Additionally, geographic atrophy represents an advanced stage of dry AMD. Macular degeneration is also passed within families so if you have a parent or a sibling with AMD, there is a 50% chance that you may develop it too. This highlights the importance of routine eye exams – especially if there is a family history of AMD.
Dry eye (Ocular Surface Disease)
Dry eye, or ocular surface disease, affects about 25% of Canadians and is one of the most common conditions seen by optometrists. Symptoms can range from mild irritation to severe discomfort, and if left untreated, it can lead to inflammation and corneal scarring. Understanding the causes of dry eye begins with knowing what a healthy tear layer should be. For lasting relief, consult an optometrist to address the root causes of your dry eye.
